Long Story:

Estimated 📖 ⏳: 5 Mins

My name is Gurdeet and this is my story. I am born and bred in East Ham, London to Indian immigrants. At the age of five, I was a late talker and this affected my ability to develop certain skills like reading and writing.

I attended state-funded schools in East Ham. I was not the smartest kid in the class but I tried my best and got support from my siblings. At the end of secondary school, my brother asked me the real-life question, ‘What do you want to do in your life?’ I always enjoyed Information Technology at school. The ability to use computers to do whatever you want, like experimenting with word art on Microsoft Word or creating funky images in Microsoft Paint. I replied with Information Technology because I couldn’t see myself in any other field. I completed my Information Technology BTEC at Newham Sixth form College (NEWVIC). I took the university root and attended City, University London for a Business Computing Systems BSc.

In my first year of university, I was assessed for Dyslexia because I always felt that I picked up things a bit slower than my peers. Knowing that I have Dyslexia meant that I had to embrace it and take advantage of some of the amazing gifts, for example, to think, conceptualise and problem solve. In my second year of university, I had attended a Human-Computer Interaction class and I suddenly fell in love with the field. The ability to understand why technology is designed in a certain way astounds me. Even I don’t know why I enjoyed this module so much. However, I felt comfortable learning this subject area and it was at that point, I decided that this was something I wanted to do in my career.

Knowing that I wanted a UX career and to learn more about this field, I applied for the following year for the Human-Computer Interaction Course at UCL and got accepted. The MSc was single-handedly the most challenging form of education I have ever completed. However, it was rewarding, I can read academic papers (surprisingly, I found this difficult at university because it was something I never had to do during my BSc), research and design technology solutions using different methods.

I have completed my MSc in September 2020 and have since been struggling to secure a full-time UX position. I have previously worked for two startups (1) Risidio (2) OxA Technologies.

In addition to my professional experience, I am the co-founder of Weoutside, a community-driven organization established in June 2024 alongside my colleague Eyram. Weoutside brings together individuals aged 21 and above who are eager to explore and participate in diverse events across London. Our community hosts its own activities, including trail running, bouldering, hikes, and more, fostering a sense of adventure and connection.
